Belize City is a bustling port city and the country’s center of commerce. It is home to some of the largest hotels and conference centers, the cruise terminal and the water taxi terminals that ferry locals and tourists alike out to islands of Caye Caulker & San Pedro. A day or two here would not be complete without a walk across the only hand-cranked bridge in Central America, or to view the colonial architecture still visible in places. Highlights in the city include, Baron Bliss Lighthouse, built in honor of its namesake, who fell in love with Belize & left his money to the country; St. John’s Cathedral, which is the oldest Anglican Cathedral in Central America; or the Museum of Belize where one can view their permanent collection of Maya artifacts from sites around the country. If you want to venture a little out of town, easy trips to the Altun Ha Maya ruins, The Belize Zoo or the Community Baboon Sanctuary are not that far away. While Belize City is not the islands or the jungle, it really does have just as much culture as some of the other areas of the country and would make for a truly interesting day!
